The second oldest borough in Lehigh County, Macungie is a suburb of Allentownand covers an area of one square mile.
In its heyday in the 19th century, the borough was the site of many events, which enriched its history and stature. Allentown is seven miles from Macungie, with the surrounding areas of Ancient Oaks, Alburtis, Wescosville, and Emmaus. During the early 18th century, German immigrants settled in the borough, which was originally called Millerstown.
The name Macungie came from the Lenape Indians; it was a phrase that meant “the feeding place of the bears.” It might have been true once, because the area is comprised of lush meadows, rich hunting grounds, and ancient forests. Macungie was also found to have vast deposits of the mineral jasper, which were mined in open-pit quarries. The stone was used for objects such as tools and weapons.
